FRODO'S JOURNAL - A day in the life of a Hobbit of the Shire. (Pre-Quest Years)

Filling the First Page
Merry was in Hobbiton today and stopped at Bag End to suggest a visit to the Green Dragon. I must have been in an overly talkative mood as he implied that perhaps I should follow Bilbo's example and write down my thoughts. (I got the distinct impression that he was growing rather tired of listening to me.) I suppose I was a bit aggitated, things have been weighing on my mind of late.

After Merry departed, the remainder of the afternoon being uneventful, I took his advice into consideration and decided I would give this journal venture an attempt. However, the idea of setting one's most private thoughts down for future record, whether or not anyone else ever sees them, is a bit disquieting. So, after sitting with pen in hand for almost a half hour with a blank page in front of me, I came to the conclusion that I could quite possibly sit there the rest of the evening with nothing more to show for my efforts.

I had just abandoned my desk when there came a knock upon my door. My cousin Mundee, stood upon the porch in the swiftly fading light, holding a plate of baked goods, telling me with a sweet smile how she thought I might like some muffins "fresh out of the oven, just this minute!" (Now , I'm not saying that the dear girl was not telling the truth, but they couldn't have been too freshly out of the oven as she was entirely too neat and tidied up to have come straight from the kitchen.) The thought makes me smile, even though Mundee, has contributed somewhat to my recent restlessness. However, she didn't tarry long, saying that she had to meet her foster parents for a dinner engagement.

Mundee hadn't been gone for perhaps more than fifteen minutes, when another manifestation of my "troubles" rapped upon my door. It was another of my cousins, Bennie Baggins. She (yes, Bennie is a "she" and quite a pretty one, too, I might add...Bennie is only a nickname, her given name is Verbena...), wanted me to come see one of her newest acquistions, a young pony filly. (Bennie raises ponies, which some folk see as a most unsuitable preoccupation for a young, unmarried, hobbit lass. However, I rather admire her spirit for listening to her own mind.) I might have been tempted to accompany her but at that very moment Sam happened along to see if I cared to pay a visit to the Green Dragon. Two visits to the Green Dragon in one day! Well, I decided that route might be the safer of the two choices. ( However, I did hear myself promising Bennie that I would see her new pony on another day...) As Sam and I struck out, I couldn't help but think what a good thing it was that neither Mundee or Bennie had happened to cross the other's path on their coming and goings. The two girls tend not to be very tolerant of each other. And, I'm afraid I'm partially to blame for that...Well, I won't go into that now, I fear I would be writing all night...

At any rate, my blank page is now quite filled with words, so, I believe I'll put down the quill for the evening.
