FRODO'S JOURNAL - A day in the life of a Hobbit of the Shire. (Pre-Quest Years)
Sam's Com-pen-dee-um
In a conversation with Sam the other day, he happened to bring up one of his favorite topics, gardening. It was obvious that he was eager for longer, warmer days. He can’t wait to get his hands into the rich soil and watch the first green plant
poke it’s tiny head into the open. He’s so passionate and knowledgeable that I suggested he compile all of this knowledge into a compendium of sorts.
At first, he looked puzzled and asked, "Umm... what’s a com-pen-dee-um?"
"It’s a book, a reference work, Sam."
The look of puzzlement was replaced by one of dismay. "But, Mr. Frodo, Oi’m already writn’ in my journal, and it’s ‘ard enough at toimes for me to keep up with that. It just seems loike between a journal and a ...a compen... a...what you said, well, it seems loike that’s an awful lot of writin’."
He suddenly seemed embarrassed. "Oh! Oi didn’t mean it to sound loike Oi’m such an expert that Oi’d be writin’ till my
fingers fell off!"
"But you are. Anyway, you wouldn’t have to do it all at once. You could work on it a little at a time. And, it would be something to do these Winter nights while you’re waiting for Spring." I said. "I’m sure that one day, when you have children, you will pass on your skills and talents to them. But in the meantime, I just thought it would be nice if others could
benefit from your knowledge."
"I don’t know, Mr. Frodo..."
"It was just a suggestion, Sam. But, if you should happen to change your mind, I’d be delighted to help you, in any way I could."
"We’ll...Oi’ll give it some thought." A smile began to play at the corner’s of Sam’s mouth. He pulled himself up to his full height as he took hold of his jacket lapels. "Me. Write a book. Imagine that!"
I do hope he seriously takes the suggestion to heart. Sam is more than a skilled gardener, he’s generous, insightful and far wiser than he realises.
